Illusion and Chemistry Exhibition at Keirnan Gallery, VA

My work is included in the online part of the exhibition "Illusion and Chemistry" at Keirnan Gallery in Virginia. Christopher James was the juror for the show and my friends Diana Bloomfield and Aspen Hochhalter made the Gallery exhibition. Congratulations Diana and Aspen! It was good that Christopher James got to see my work and very happy he included me in this exhibition! Jame's book on Alternative Silver processes is the standard for any Alt Process class...he's a genius!

A screen shot of the work. This work, a diptych, is new, 2011 and was made  in response to pulling my own work out of the rubbish bin after 3 days, and pairing it with a found work. When placed together it speaks to the mistreatment of slaves on plantations (part A) before Reconstruction and my feelings of sadness and outrage around this (part B). I feel this might be another new direction in my work, which is exciting!

New Romantics: Darkness and Light in Australian Art by Simon Gregg

The new publication New Romantics: Darkness and Light in Australian Art by Simon Gregg has just been released to the public in which my work is featured along with many other wonderful Australian Artists. Published by Australian Scholarly Publishing, the book was launched in September 2011.

From the ASP website:

"Something is happening in Australian art today. We are witnessing the resurgence of ideas that took root centuries ago – a return to passion in art, and a return to atmosphere and awe.Historians called it Romanticism; a disposition for melancholic yearning, for communion with nature, for the sublime. Australian artists, in countless numbers, are engaging with these themes again today.

Set against the dazzling backdrop of the Australian sublime, New Romantics charts the dynasties of Romantic art. From its nascent beginnings in European philosophy to a cause championed by Australian colonialists, this compelling survey seeks to understand how it has landed in the hands of a new generation of Australian artists.

Through the work of 36 contemporary Australian artists who have reinvigorated this movement, New Romantics traces the influences that led them to this unlikely path. This is the first book that seeks to understand a paradigm shift that is shaping the future course of Australian art.

Lavishly illustrated, New Romantics is a book for lovers of art, atmosphere, and awe. A compendium for the twenty-first century, New Romantics is a defining work on the return to beauty in Australian art.

Artists include: Rob Bartolo, Hannah Bertram, Magdalena Bors, William Breen, Sheridan Brown, Jane Burton, Jason Cordero, Peter Daverington, Iris Fischer, Dale Frank, Briele Hansen, Louise Hearman, Bill Henson, Petrina Hicks, Annie Hogan, Mark Kimber, Chris Langlois, Richard Lipp, Joanna Logue, Tony Lloyd, Susan Milne, John Morris, Saffron Newey, Sarah Nguyen, Izabela Pluta, Robbie Rowlands, Kathryn Ryan, Natalie Ryan, Sam Shmith, Sophia Szilagyi, Camilla Tadich, Juha Tolonen, Stephen Wickham, Philip Wolfhagen, Greg Wood, and Joel Zika.

SIMON GREGG has held professional posts at Heide Museum of Modern Art and City Museum at Old Treasury. Simon Gregg has curated over fifty exhibitions at a variety of venues, and has published widely on Australian art. He is currently curator of the Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale. New Romantics is his first full-length book. "

In*Sight exhibition at Gallery Bergen at Bergen Community College, Paramus, NJ

I've been chosen to exhibit in the In*Sight exhibition at Gallery Bergen at the Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ. Its very exciting to be part of an exhibition of New Jersey Artists. Along with 9 other artists, there will be an opening on Tuesday November 8th at Gallery Bergen at Bergen Community College. I'm looking forward to meeting the other artists in the show.

"The curatorial premise for the In*sight exhibition seeks works that examine the duality of vision and intuition and the outward/inward nature of things. "

My work Bombs Away Dream Baby (Red, White and Blue) were chosen for exhibiton. See image below.

Bombs Away Dream Baby (Red, White and Blue) speaks to the influence and presence of the US government on the world stage today and whether this power is diminishing or strengthening with regard to the cost of fighting 2 wars and the rise of China and India as competitors for import/exports in terms of economic growth.

Bombs Away Dream Baby (Red, White and Blue) were made with a 10 x 8 pinhole camera. They were then contact printed and made into cyanotypes. Then scanned and enlarged. The Red and White image have been manipulated, with one added color (red) and one with the color removed (white). The Blue image is that of the cyanotype. They are then printed as Digital Inkjet prints.

Solo exhibition Entwined at the Imperial Arts Centre, Rocky Mount, NC

My exhibition opened on Octoer 8th with the opening reception on Sunday October 9th, 2011. The show was curated by Catherine Lloyd and looked lovely! Thank you so much to Catherine, Andre and all the team that enabled this show to happen.  And also, a big thanks to those that turned out for the show. I appreciate your support!

The picture to the right is the Imperial Arts Centre. As well as my show opening, there were two other artists work that opened as well. My former colleague and friend, Amy Freeman, a painter, also opened her painting exhibition. Amy is an awesome painter and her work can be seen here. Also the work of Robert Tynes was opened who is a contemporary Trompe L'oeil artist. He also gave a very informative Artist talk and demonstration of his painting style. Awesome illusion and a nice artist talk. Thanks Robert!

As you can see, its a large space and my works hung well together with large and smaller works contrasting to give some 'movement' to the viewing experience. Following are a few installation shots that include works from the Double Vision series, the Asymmetry series and the Bloodline series:
